TEDxWeekendRoma Pre-Event

In July 2019 I talked to Emilia - organiser of TEDxWeekendRoma - and Maurizio from TEDxCesena - also member of the organising team of TEDxWeekendRoma - about the idea of organising a "pre-event" before the Weekend started. The idea of pre events is explained in this video about one we organised before the TEDFest NYC

Both Emilia and Maurizio had taken part in the Pre TED Summit Social Gathering I organised in Edinburgh in July, and Maurizio had been at Pre TED Summit in Calgary Canada in 2016.

Emilia and Maurizio agreed that this would be a good extra and we decided to go ahead.

We start at 15:30 at an amazing venue where we have a special event space reserved for us on Level II.

The main goal is community building among participants of the Weekend (and perhaps selected others if we have capacity).

It's particularly valuable for first timers, who may be nervous about going to an event where they know nobody, but.... it's for everyone.

15:30 -16:00 Soft start, informal networking, registration

16:00 Official welcomes, introduction, housekeeping,

16:20-16:50 Ice -breakers and "Connection cards"

16:50-17:40 "speed introductions" meet 15 people in 50 minutes

17:40 -18:30 Informal networking

18:30 till 1 AM Buffet dinner** - at the venue - cost 38.50 Euros/head - See details of what is included in this price at the bottom.

22:00 . Maybe you will want to go elsewhere with people you met/maybe stay. At this stage, do whatever you want (subject to our Code of Conduct - see below).

What are Pre Events all about?

I started organising pre-events when I went to TED Global in 2011, and since then have organised them in Calgary, CapeTown, Cracow, Edinburgh, New York, and Warsaw. Pre Events solve a problem that I experienced when I go to events in places where I don't live and don't know people. "What to do before it starts" - often you end up in a noisy bar and many people are excluded.

Why Pre-Events ?

I've found that there just isn't enough time to meet all the other participants during TEDx-es, TEDFests and other TED events. A lot of the available time is taken up with the organised activities. At the networking and social events there is no way you can meet everyone. More time in a relaxed environment to hang out together is what we aim to offer with Pre-Events with ice breakers fun and integration.

The goal of this event is to build community among participants. When you are from out of town - it's always great to have a place where you can hang out before things get under way.

About the Venue

Baja will offer an unforgettable experience in a magical place. A Liberty structure built on an ancient harbour barge anchored on the Tiber banks by the city centre. **About dinner

For planning purposes, we need to confirm to the venue the number of people for the buffet. If you want to meet up with other participants, but don't want to come to dinner, we will give you contact details of other people in the same situation - but we can't look after you. We don't have a sponsor who can pay for people who want to attend but not eat. Going out in central Rome is going to cost you money anyway, so why not stay with us!

1. Q Is this an official part of the TEDxWeekend Roma program ?

A. No - it is organised by Richard Lucas, in collaboration with the TEDxWeekend Roma organisers and team.

2. Q Is it free ?

A. "Yes and no" - We are organising it for free, but we have the venue free on the basis that we will eat there afterwards. The cost of the buffet is 38.50 Euro per head. Going out in Rome costs is quite expensive anyway.

3. Who is Richard Lucas, what is his connection with TEDxWeekend Roma?

A. Richard has been active in the TED and TEDx Community since 2009 - as per his TED profile here . Apart from this he active in entrepreneurship promotion, is a businessman with companies in Poland, the UK and USA, and teaches entrepreneurship workshops at Business Schools and Universities. He has met the organisers at other TED organised events.
